Lecture4: Histology Of Airwayss Flashcards
Which part of the respiratory mucosa has an immunological protective function?
Lamina propria
Describe Lamina Propria?
Highly vascular and has plasma cells
What is mucus?
Goblet cells and mixed muco-serous glands
What does Mucus move in the form of?
A continuous Mucous blanket
Which nasal cavity is dilated and lined by skin?
The Nasal Vestibule
Which Nasal Cavity makes up most of the volume of the nasal cavities and lined by the respiratory mucosa?
Respiratory Region
Which nasal cavity is for smell?
Olfactory region
Which nasal cavity is at the roof of the nasal cavity?
Olfactory region
Describe Olfactory cells?
Bipolar neurons, has an apical aspect modified to form olfactory vesicles and a base of axons that form nerve fibers
Describe Sustentacular cells
Columnar cells who’s apical aspects have microvilli
What is Sustentacullar cells function?
Provide physical support, nourishment and electrical insulation for the Olfactory cells
Describe Basal Cells?
Stem cell
What does Lamina Propria contain?
Serous-fluid secreting Bowman’s Glands
What is the Nasopharynx lined by?
Respiratory mucosa
What is under the Nasopharynx’s roof?
Lamina Propria
What does the Nasopharynx’s posterior wall contain?
Pharyngeal tonsil
How is the Larynx kept open?
By cartilages in it’s walls
What is the Larynx covered by?
Respiratory mucosa
What does the submucosa of the trachea contain?
Mucous + serous submucosal glands
What do the submucosal ducts extend to open into?
Surface of the mucosa
What does the Catrilage Layer of the Trachea look like?
16-20 incomplete C-shaped rings separated by fibroelastic
What does the Posterior wall of the Cartilage layer contain?
Trachealis muscle
Describe the Adventitia of the trachea?
Fibroelastic CT that binds trachea to adjacent structures
