Lecture18: Consequences Of Respiratory Mismatch Flashcards
What is the most common form of hypoxia?
Hypoxic hypoxia
Causes of Hypoxic Hypoxia?
High altitude
Name causes of Hypoventilation?
Pneumothorax, poliomyelitis, morphine poisoning
Intrapulmonary right to left shunts are reversible if?
The lung area is hypoventilated but normally perfused
Name an example of a persistent shunt?
Pulmonary A-V fistula
What is anemic hypoxia?
Where there is a reduced amount of Hb
Causes of anemic hypoxia?
Effect is severe during exercise
What does CO do to the dissociation curve?
Shifts it to the left
Which hypoxia is characteristized by cherry red colour?
Hypemic Hypoxia
How does Hypemic hypoxia lead to death?
70-80% of circulating Hb is converted to COHb
What is Stagnant Hypoxia?
A condition where blood flow to the tissues is so shit
Causes of Generalized stagnation?
Congestive heart failure and Polycythemia Vera
Causes of Localized Stagnantion?
Construction of arterioles of fingers and toes by cold as in Raynud’s desease
What is Histotoxic Hypoxia?
Cells unable to utilize O2 due to Toxic agent
What does Cyanide Poisoning block the action of?
Cytochrome oxidase
What is Hyperbaric O2 therapy most effective for?
Anemic Hypoxia
Is Hyperbaric O2 therapy good for Hypoxic Hypoxia?
Yes, except RIGHT TO LEFT SHUNT
What is the Threshold of Cyanosis?
5gm reduced Hb per 100ml of blood in capillaries
Causes of Cyanosis?
Hypoxemic and stagnant hypoxia
What causes respiratory acidosis?
Hypoventilation
What causes respiratory alkalosis?
Hyperventilation
