What are three actions within political participation?
- Activities that are located within the sphere of the state
(Voting, party volunteering, contacting politicians) - Acts that are lcated outside the sphere of the state, but still target policals arenas or a common casue
( petitions, demostrations) - Activities that are lcated outside the sphere of the state and do not target the collective level, while still motivated by politcal intentions
( Political consumerism, online commenting)
What is the political paradox?
Citizens who are already participate in politics are politcaly driven and highly likely to engage in emerging forms o politcal participation as a means of expanding their political toolkit
What is the politcal transformation?
Decline in electoral partcicaption is being casued by an increase in non-institutional participation
What are the four partciaption profiles?
- People who see voting as a duty. grown into this thought. they are unlikely to participate.
- people whom voting is not necessarily given.. lilkely to particapte in newer forms outside the state sphere
- The populism profile. less likely to vote. Not disengaged, they prefer direct participation and expression that circumvent politcal and media elites. for example reacting on social media.
- Stealth democracy. Most citizens have no desire to participate actively in politics. Prefer to leave politics to elected representatives with whom thet only bother every few years. only likely to participate in elections.
What is the resource model?
Participation is driven by resources so citizens with higer economic status, more skills, and more knowledge are more likely to participate politically
What is the mobiliation model?
Political behavior is guided by norms and sanctions, family and peer pressure, and by (party) campaigns
What is ascribed status?
Assigned according to qualities beyond a persons control, such as age, gender, etnicity, family orgin, geographical orgin, etc.
What a achieved status?
Acruired trough a person’s direct efforts, such as education or occupation, profession.
What falls in between achieved and ascribed status?
Religion, social status or social class.
What is political socialization?
Process of transfering knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and general dispositions about politics from one generation to the other.
