Lecture One Flashcards
What is symbiosis and name the three main types of it: (for each state whether or not they are normally obligatory )
Refers to the close relationship between two different organisms:
Commensalism- one partner benefits other remains unharmed (normally not obligatory)
Mutualism- both partners benefit (often but not always obligatory)
Parasitism- the parasite benefits and the host is harmed (obligatory for the parasite but not for the host)
What is the difference between an endo and and ecto parasite?
ecto- infest the host
endo- infects the host
What is the difference between an obligatory and faculative?
Obligatory- host required
Facultative- host is not required
What is the definitive host?
The host in which sexual maturity is obtained
What is an intermediate host?
additional obligatory host in the parasites life cycle
What is a paratenic host
additional non-obligatory host within the life cycle
What is a vector?
arthropod carrier of infective stage from one host to another
What is a reservoir host?
alternative host, does not suffer clinical disease but can act as a carrier
What is an accidental host?
one that does not normally harbour the parasite and one that it is unable to complete its life cycle within
