What is the difference between hearing and listening?

A
  • Hearing – the physiological process of receiving sound.
  • Listening – the conscious act of recognizing, understanding, and accurately interpreting the message of others.
  • Hearing – automatic, reflexive
  • Listening – conscious, purposeful

A

We pay attention to messages that are consistent with our own points of view and we tend to ignore those that are not.

What is scriptwriting? Defensive listening?

A

Scriptwriting – waiting your turn to talk so you plan what you’re going to say and when it is your turn, you say it… But you don’t listen.

Defensive listening – occurs when we feel threatened, when your ego is threatened, when your sense of self is threatened.

A
  • -listening is defined, constituted and surrounded by culture–
  • Culture tells us what is recognizable, it gives us the framework for understanding. It tells us what the messages
  • What counts as a message? Who counts as a communicating other? E.G. The Blackfeet’s way of listening is different – listening is defined, constituted and surrounded by culture.
