Lecture: Integument Flashcards
What are the layers of the epidermis?
Stratum corneum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale
Langerhans Cells
Immune cells of the skin
Displays antigens on their surface
Migrates to lymph nodes
Interacts with T cells to mount immune response
Tonofilaments
Cable-like rigid orientation of keratin filaments
Lamellar granules (lamellar bodies)
Vesicles filled with lipids.
After apoptosis, the contents of the vesicles are released and fills the spaces between the dead keratinocytes.
Forms extracellular lipid barrier and decreases water permeability of the epidermis.
Keratohyalin granules
Contain filaggrin and contributes to the formation of tonofilaments
Filaggrin
Remains in the keratinocyte after death and bundles/attaches the keratin filaments together giving tonofilaments.
Mutations in filaggrin are associated with eczema
Melanosomes
Melanin granules
Anagen
Phase of active hair shaft and hair follicle growth
Catagen
Phase of degeneration. Involution of the hair follicle
Telogen
Resting phase of hair follicle
