Lecture #9 Relationship Structures Flashcards
Same-sex attracted individuals form two primary types of
relationships:
Hetero gendered and Homogendered!
What are Homogendered sexual/romantic relationships?
involve two partners who share similar gender roles and gender
identities!
The most common expression of these relationships is
between two cisgender males or two cisgender females!
When partners in homogendered relationship are the
same age, how do they treat each other?
they often treat each other as social equals
(hence, such relationships are sometimes called
egalitarian).
Some homogendered relationships are uncommon, what are they?
- Two masculine, gynaplhilic females exist but are RARE! (Two butch lesbians). Two butch lesbians are rare.
- Two feminine, transgender, androphlic males are REALLY RARE!
What are Heterogendered relationships?
involve partners who have different gender roles and gender
identities and, thus, do not treat each other as social
equals! (Me and Clay).
Transgender male androphiles & transgender female
gynephiles (Chaz Bono) typically form heterogendered relationships
with cisgender, same-sex partners!
Butch and Femme women can alos be a heterogendered relationship! (dont treat eachother as social equals; have different gender roles!)
used to describe a lesbian woman who exhibits a feminine identity or gender presentation.
femme
What kind of relationship do Butch and Femme possess?
Heterogendered! (They do not treat eachother as social equals, and have different gender roles/presentations!)
Protrayed in the Lacage Aux Folles Movie (1978): the heterogendered relationship protrays a feminine male and a masculine male. Is this common?
No, this relatively rare!
Involve two partners who differ in age by at least one genration (10y)
Age graded relationships!
In homogendered relationships, they usually treat each other as social equals except in the case for:
Age graded homogendered relationships! Only sometimes tho!
Do age graded homogendered relationships always treat each other as social equals?
No always.
What kind of relationships do the Mpondo men in the south africa gold mines possess?
Heterogendered age graded relationships!
Characteristics of Mpondo men:
- mine marriages
-older partner pays the younger, more attractive and feminine partner for sex. - The younger male was financialy rewarded for doing so. Makes money to bring back to this family.
MSM =
Males who have sex with men
The younger partner in the Mpondo men study are ______________-rewarded while the older men are _______________rewarded.
financially and sexually
What do androphilic males prefer?
masculinity!
Gendered language is not used when trying to acquire a mate if you are :
A heterosexual male (Straight guy). But gendered language IS USED if are a gay guy (androphilic male).
Because androphilic males prefer masculinity:
- 98% of MSM described themselves as masculine, not
feminine - When desirable traits were mentioned, masculinity
was listed 96% of the time
*3. When undesirable traits were mentioned, femininity
was listed 100% of the time.
What is a transgender androphlic male?
A biological male that now identifies as a female and are atteacted to masculinity. (Transwoman).
What is another term for a transwoman?
Transgender male (male refers to the sex the individual was assigned at birth even tho they now identify as a women.)
Transman = transgender female (biologically female but now identifies as a man).
Because gynaphilic females prefer feminity:
- Lesbians were more likely to characterized
themselves as feminine (53%), than masculine
(38%) but this bias was much less pronounced
than in gay men - When describing preferred traits, femininity was
listed 76% of the time - If interest in sports was not coded as masculine,
preference for femininity jumped to 89% - When describing undesirable traits, masculinity
was mentioned 95% of the time
Attraction to gynandromorphs, who are biological males with both breasts and a penis, colloquially known as “she-males.”
Gynandromorphophile
biological males with both breasts and a penis, colloquially known as “she-males.”
gynandromorphs
gyandromorphiles are more like…
gynaphilic men (straight men) than androphlic men (gay men)
They seem to like the female “look” that gynadromorphs possess.
