Lecture #7 Female Sexual Arousal Flashcards

1
Q

what do we use for female vaginal arousal measurment?

A

Vaginal photoplethysmograph
-emits and detects light.
-The light source illuminates the capillary bed of the vaginal wall and the blood circulating within it.
-the vaginal pulse amplitude has been found to be reliable in assessing the increase in blood flow during sexual arousal

Q

Using a vaginal photoplethysmograph, how can we tell when a woman is unaroused?

A

There is a pink hue. (Less light gets picked up).

Q

Using a vaginal photoplethysmograph, how can we tell when a woman is aroused?

A

More light is refracted off of the pink wall of the vaginal wall and becomes a dark purple hue.
-Light reflects more when aroused.

Q

Is heterosexual women’s sexual arousal sex specific? (Is thier abilty to be turned on only done by a certain sex?)

A

NO! When looking at the graph, they abilty to get turned on by either men or women is vitually the same. So no, a hterosexual women’s sexual arousal is NOT SEX SPECIFIC!

Q

Are their sex differences between hetero men and hetero women in terms of sex specifity in genital arousal?

A

YES!
-Hetero men show a clear distinction on what turns them on. (Women obviously).
-Hetero women DO NOT show a sex specific preferences when looking at their objective genital arousal.

Q

Heterosexual women are genitally aroused when they see….

A

men or women
-Sex has to be the trigger because the sex of the actors DO NOT MATTER

Q

Is heterosexual women’s subjective sexual attraction sex specific?

A

Also NO! There is no difference in sexual feelings whether they view females or males.
-It is non-contingent! (Their feelings or arousal is not dependant on the viewing of one sex or another).

Q

Hetero sexual women’s subjective sexual feelings their objective genital arousal……

A

are NOT sexually concordant ! They seem to under report wheras their sexual arousal tells us they are more sexually interested than what they are telling us!

Q

Although their sexual arousal and subjective feelings are incordant (dont align), hetero women both tend (very very small percentage higher) to like watching women (lesbians) having sex more than men.

Q

In addition to their favourite: (sex, no violence, and consent), hetero women are also vaginally aroused to…..

A

Non preffered sexual activities such as:
-sex, violence, consent.
-sex, violence, no consent.

Q

What are the female sexual orientation differences between hetro women and homo (lesbian) women in terms of subjective sexual feelings?

17
Q

Like heterosexual women, lesbian vaginal arousal is not sex specific
when shown

A

high intensity sexual stimuli

18
Q

Lesbians are more sex specific than heterosexual women in terms of vaginal arousal when shown

A

low intensity sexual stimuli

19
Q

Monosexuality?

A

Monosexuality is romantic or sexual attraction to members of one sex or gender only.

20
Q

What sexual combination is favoured most by heterosexual women

A

Sex, consent, no violence.

21
Q

Lesbians are more sex specific than heterosexual women in terms of vaginal arousal when shown..

A

low intensity sexual stimuli

22
Q

Although they have higher sex specificty than heterosexual women in terms of vaginal arousal, lesbians exhibit less sex specific genital arousal than…

A

monosexual men

23
Q

Lesbians are more vaginally aroused than they think by men! (Way more than they subjectively report).

A
24
Q

Refers to the degree to which two aspects of human sexual arousal (genital response and self-reported sexual arousal) correspond with each other.

A

Sexual concordance

25
Q

Do homosexual women and heterosexual women differ in sexual concordance?

A

So heterosexual women are sexually non concordant in general.

-Lesbians follow this trend when shown higher intensity stimlui. (They cant help but get horny even when they said they werent attracted subjectively). = sexually non concordant!

-However, when shown low intense sexual stimuli, lesbians are more sexually concordant. But not as sexually concordant as men! Men dont seem to lie about what their penises like!

26
Q

Lesbian genital arousal is shifted in a…

A

male typical direction!
They are not exactly like men but way more different than heterosexual women.

27
Q

FtM transexuals exhibit genital arousal patterns that are

A

intermediate between cisgender men and women

28
Q

In terms of genital arousal, lesbians are….

A

non-sex specific, when looking at high intensity sexual stimuli! (they get horny looking at males and females when their is high intensity).

29
Q

Two important measures for eye tracking?

A
  1. Latency to first fixation (LFF)
    (automatic)
  2. Controlled attention
    * Total fixation duration (TFD)
    * Total fixation count (TFC)
30
Q

LFF is not sex-specific in

A

exclusively androphilic and mostly androphilic/Kinsey 1
women

31
Q

LFF is sex specific in

A

ambiphilic women and exclusively gynephlic
women

32
Q

In ambiphilic women,
controlled attention is…

A

not sex specific, but we
would not expect it to be

33
Q

In monosexual (only attracted to one sex) women, controlled
attention is…

A

sex specific

34
Q

In all females, controlled
attention….

A

is concordant
with self-reported sexual
orientation
(What their eyes look at aligns with what thier declared sexual identity is).

35
Q

Female sexual orienting toward sexual stimuli appears to be less
coupled to automatic physiological processes compared to male
sexual orientation

A

Remeber !

36
Q

Female sexual orienting toward sexual stimuli has a relatively greater
cognitive component compared to male sexual orientation

A

remember

37
Q

Greater cognitive control in the sexual/reproductive realm may be
adaptive for heterosexual women because they risk incurring relatively
greater costs if they make poor sexual/reproductive decisions

A

remember

38
Q

Auomatic attention is primarily responsible for activating ____________ and controlled attention is more associated with ________________

A

physiological genital arousal and self reported or the conscious experiance of arousal.

39
Q

Enables measurement of the specific features attended to in the stimulus

A

controlled attention

40
Q

total time spent viewing an entire stimulus

A

viewing time

41
Q

controlled attentional proccesses may be more related to…

A

self reported experince of arousal.
