Lecture 9 Learning Objectives Flashcards
Parenchyma
Components of the gland derived from epithelium
Stroma
Connective capsule surrounding the entire gland as well as the connective tissue partitions separating the lobules and lobes (septa)
Lobes
Subdivision of a compound gland separated from adjacent lobes by septae
Lobules
Subdivision of lobe, separated by delicate septae
Each lobule is equivalent of simple, branched gland
Acini
Secretory components of lobule
May be serous, mucous or sero-mucous
Basement membrane covers outer surface of the acinus
Myoepithelial cells
Intercalated ducts
Drain the secretory acini
Lined by simple squamous to low cuboidal epithelium
Bicarbonate/ chloride exchange
Striated Ducts
Lined with cuboidal epithelium transitioning to low cuboidal epithelium
Actively reabsorb Na ions
Parotid glands
Only Serous acini
Submandibular glands
Mixed glands
Demilunes around mucous acini
Sublinguil glands
Mixed – mucous acini are predominant
