Lecture 9: Language Flashcards
What is Broca’s area involved in?
Speech production.
Is Broca’s area in both hemispheres?
No. Just in the left hemisphere.
What are the symptoms of Broca’s aphasia?
Good language comprehension but loss of the ability to produce speech.
What is Wernike’s area involved in?
Language comprehension.
Is Wernicke’s area in both hemispheres?
No. Just in left hemisphere.
What are the symptoms of Wernicke’s aphasia?
Poor language comprehension but good speech production. Results in non-sensical speech.
Is Wernicke’s area located in front or behind the auditory cortex?
Behind.
What is the Wernicke-Geschwind Model for repeating a spoken word?
Auditory cortex -> Wernicke’s area -> Broca’s area -> Motor cortex.
What is the Wernicke-Geschwind model for repeating a written word?
Visual cortex -> Angular gyrus -> Wernicke’s area -> Broca’s area -> Motor cortex.
How many dorsal and ventral parallel language pathways are there?
Two dorsal: - speed production and word repetition - syntax One ventral: - extracting meanings from words
Does Broca’s aphasia and Wernicke’s aphasia exist in deaf people or in Bilingual people?
Exists in both. In bilingual people the lesser known language is most affected.
What is unique about left handers with regard to representation of speech in the brain?
Bilateral representation of speech is only found in left-handed people.
What is the Wada procedure?
One hemisphere is put to sleep.
Which hemisphere is involved in the emotional colouring of language?
The right hemisphere.
Other than emotion, how is the right hemisphere involved in language?
Involved in writing.
