Lecture 3: Glial Cells And Intro To The BBB Flashcards
Do most cells of the brain originate from the ectoderm, mesoderm or endoterm?
The ectoderm.
Which is the only glial cell that doesn’t originate from the ectoderm? And where does it originate from?
Microglial cells. The originate from the mesoderm.
What are the two types of glial cells of the PNS?
Schwann cells and satellite cells.
Which type of myelinating glial cell can cover many axonal internodes and which can only cover one segment?
Oligodendrocytes can myelinate many axonal nodes of many axons.
Schwann cells myelinate only one axonal node.
What are the two types of astrocytes?
Fibrous and protoplasmic.
Which type of astrocyte is present in white matter and which is present in grey matter?
Fibrous type is present in white matter and protoplasmic type is present in grey matter.
Which type of astrocyte contains more organelles?
Protoplasmic astrocyte.
Which glial cells take up extra neurotransmitter and potassium at the synapse?
Astrocytes.
