Lecture 4: Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Name all the cranial nerves and their number.
I Olfactory II Optic III Oculomotor IV Trochlear V Trigeminal VI Abducens VII Facial VIII Vestibulocochlear IX Glossopharyngeal X Vagus XI Accessory XII Hypoglossal
The lateral rectus muscle of the eye is supplied by which cranial nerve? And what does it do?
Cranial nerve VI (Abducens). It moves the eye out to the side.
The superior oblique muscle of the eye is supplied by which cranial nerve? What does it do?
Cranial nerve IV (Trochlear). Involved in looking down.
Which cranial nerve supplies most eye muscles?
Cranial nerve III (Occulomotor).
The Trigeminal nerve (V) supplies three sections of the face, what are they called from top to bottom?
- Ophthalmic
- Maxillary
- Mandibular
As well as providing motor input to the facial muscles, what does the Facial nerve (VII) do?
Receives sensory input from the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue (taste).
The taste from the posterior 1/3rd of the tongue is innervated by which cranial nerve?
Glossopharyngeal (IX).
Is the Vagus nerve involved in sensory or motor innervation?
Both!
What does the Accessory cranial nerve (XI) do?
Turns head and moves shoulders.
What does the Hypoglossal cranial nerve (XII) do?
Input to muscles of the tongue.
