LECTURE 9 (Heterocyclic compounds) Flashcards

1
Q

What happens when an ammonium salt reacts with a strong base (e.g NaOH)?

Q

What are Ammonium salts?

A

Odorless, white, crystalline solids that are much more water-soluble than neutral amines because they are ionic

Q

If a free amine is needed, how is it regenerated from an amine salt?

A

It is regenerated from an amine salt by treatment with a base

Q

What are the properties of Quaternary ammonium ions?

A
  • Four organic groups bonded to the nitrogen atom
  • No H atom that can be removed by a base + no lone pair on nitrogen that can bond to H+ -> neither acidic or basic -> structures unaffected by changes in pH
  • Salts called “quaternary ammonium salts”
