LECTURE 1 Flashcards
Define ‘Chemistry’
The study of the nature, properties and transformations of matter
What is Matter?
The physical material that makes up the universe; anything that has mass and occupies space
What is Property?
A characteristic useful for identifying a substance or object
What is the difference between Physical change and Chemical change?
Physical change = A change that does not affect the chemical makeup of a substance or object
Chemical change = A change in the chemical makeup of a substance
How can Solid, Liquid and Gas be defined?
Solid = definite volume + shape
Liquid definite volume + indefinite shape
Gas = indefinite volume + indefinite shape
Define ‘Chemical formula’
A notation for a chemical compound using element symbols and subscripts to show how many atoms of each element are present
Describe the Atomic Theory
- All matter is composed of atoms
- Atoms of a given element differ from atoms of all other elements
- Chemical compounds consist of atoms combined in specific ratios
- Chemical reactions change only the way that atoms are combined in compounds - the atoms themselves are unchanged
What are Isotopes?
Atoms with identical atomic numbers but different mass number
How can you measure density?
Mass / Volume
