Through what two ways do parents’ reaction to a child’s emotions influence them?
Mirroring
Emotional Coaching
Mirroring
When parents reflects a child emotion back at them.
Can be verbal or non-verbal.
Breeds warmth and helps normalise emotional expression + teach children emotions.
How does Mirroring Evolve With age?
Methods used will vary. For example, smiling back at a 4 month old VS telling a teen they look anxious.
Emotional Coaching
Parent provides discussion and tools that helps children cope, regulate and understand emotions.
Cultural variability plays a role.
What is the link between Emotional Coaching and Mirroring?
Emotional Coaching is a step further than mirroring as it not only acknowledges but takes action to help children in the future.
Still Face Paradigm
Study wherein parent alternated between neglect and faces of warmth.
Child became distressed when “still Face was shown” and distress increased with each subsequent still Face.
Thus, infants are attuned to parent’s emotions and show violation of Expectation Paradigm.
