Lecture 9: climate change pt. 1 Flashcards
climate
average daily weather over an extended period of time in a certain location
climate is the whole system
weather
reflects short term conditions of the atmosphere
Milankovitch cycles
there’s axial wobble/precision of the Earth and variation of tilt which mean variation of orbit
IPCC
intergovernmental panel on climate change
Ozone
there are greenhouse gases that cause its depletion (hydrofluorocarbons) but it is a greenhouse gas too, one of the things we’re interested in when we think about it is that it helps to ensure we can have life on the planet
Albedo Effect
the reflecting power of the surface, when ice melts then there is less reflective material and so less heat is reflected off the earth and then more heat is absorbed–a positive feedback loop
Methane
a greenhouse gas CH4 that is greater than carbon
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
a green house gas
Green House Gas (GHG)
Water Vapor (H2O)
Methane (CH4)
Carbon Dioxide (Co2)
Nitrous Oxide (N20)
are all green house gases
