Lecture 8: Electricity pt 2 Nuclear and Fracking Flashcards

1
Q

nuclear fission

A

essentially having nuclear resource/fuel in this case uranium in some kind of reactor vessel superheating a special heavy water solution which cycles through this really closed contained system and that superheated material is then back to the basic generating electricity, the water is team rotates the turbine drives the generator that creates electricity

Q

hydraulic fracturing

A

fluid pumped into rock at high pressures
rock is fractured and sand keeps cracks open
gas and oil is released HORIZONTAL branches in every direction to crate a bunch of small fractures rather than dig down extract
can gain a lot of resources from a less lush deposit of natural resources
drilling and going out horizontally putting pressure like explosives to create fissures in the rock matrix
erode some material out and release petroleum products
