Lecture 10: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaption Flashcards
mitigation
focuses on limiting greenhouse gas emissions to moderate global climate change
adpation
focuses on learning to live with the environmental changes and societal consequences brought about by global climate change
carbon capture and utilitzation concrete
Basically capture and turn into concrete and that concrete is sequestering that carbon for the next hundred years or so. They take co2 from power plants and convert to limestone to create portlandite or Portland cement Current concrete production accounts for about 8% of all emissions, have potential to reduce footprint by 50 percent.
direct air capture systems
idea here is removing CO2 from the air and storing it somewhere or converting it into synthetic fuel, some systems are large which require lots of space and energy, and some are about the size of a mack truck.
climate refugees
people displaced from their homes due to climate emergency/climate change
carbon sequestration
capturing and storing/putting to use atmospheric carbon dioxide
the climate gap
The disproportionate impact of climate change and climate change mitigation on certain social groups, such as people of color and the poor.
