What type of gland are the breasts?
Subcutaneous gland
Where are the breasts located?
Bed of breasts extends from ribs 2-6 and from the lateral border of the sternum to the mid-axillary line.
What attaches the breasts to the skin?
Suspensory ligaments
How many lobes make up the secretory tissue of the breast?
15-25 lobes
What space lies between the fascia and breast?
Retromammary space
Arterial blood supply for the breasts?
Arterial supply is via the lateral mammary branches from lateral thoracic artery and medial mammary branches from internal thoracic artery.
Venous drainage of the breasts?
Venous drainage is via the medial and lateral mammary veins.
What nodes do >75% of lymph from the breast drain to?
Ipsilateral axillary lymph nodes and then to supraclavicular nodes
Lymph drainage for inner breast quadrants?
Parasternal lymph nodes
Lymph drainage for lower inner breast quadrant?
Abdominal lymph nodes
Lymph drainage for the upper limb?
Axillary lymph nodes
What is the axillary tail (of spence)?
A contiguous extension of adipose angling superolaterally from the primary breast into the axilla.
Basic functional unit of breast?
Terminal duct lobular unit
What is breast milk composed of?
Approximately:
88% water
7.5% carbohydrate (mainly lactose)
3.5% lipid
1.5% protein
Also contains small quantities of ions, vitamins and IgA antibodies.
What is the skin on the nipple consisting of?
The nipple has a wrinkled surface and is covered by a thin, highly pigmented keratinised squamous epithelium.
