1
Q

What is design?

A

A plan or drawing to show the look, function and/ or workings of a building, system, or other object before it is made.

Q

What are the 2 key parts of the research step?

A
  1. consider existing applicable literature, problems and successes associated with existing solutions, costs and potential market
  2. be mindful of sources being used

Q

What are the 3 key parts of the design requirements step?

A
  • Establishing design requirements and conduction requirements analysis, sometimes termed problem definition - effectively what problem are you trying to solve and how do you plant to solve it?
  • there are two sets of design requirements: customer and internal requirements
  • the 3 types if statements in a requirements documents are:
    1. Shall - This must be implemented
    2. Will - This will state a fact or declaration of purpose for the design
    3. Should - these are non-mandatory, typically define something to optimize

Q

What is the conceptual design step, and what methods can be used to do it?

A
  • this step is done to minimize the likelihood of error, manage costs, assess risks, and evaluate the potential success of the intended project
  • this can be done with a weighted trade study

Q

What is the preliminary design step?

A

The overall system configurations are defending, and schematics, diagrams and layouts of the project may provide early project configuration

Q

What is the detailed design step?

A

Cad programs can be used to make drafts and simulate design allowing potential design issues to be addressed before prototyping.

Q

What is the verification and validation testing step?

A

Verification: checks that a product, service or system meets specifications.

Validation: intended to check if the operational needs of the user are met.

Q

What is the production planning step?

A

involves selecting the production process, determining the sequence of operations, and the selection of tools, fixtures, metal cutting and metal or plastics forming tools

Q

What are the 5 steps of doing a weighted trade study?

A
  1. Assign weights to every design requirement
  2. Have all team members give the design a score for each requirement
  3. average the score to have a single score represent each requirement
  4. The weight is multiplied by the average score resulting in a weighted average score for each requirement.
  5. These weighted scores are then summed for each design giving each design a numerical value to show how good each design is.

Q

What are the 6 C’s of decision making?

A

[Construct] a clear picture of precisely what must be decided

[compile] a list of requirements that must be met

[collect] information on alternates that meet the requirements

[Consider] the what might go wrong factor with each alternative

[commit] to a decision and follow through with it
