Lecture 4 Flashcards
What is a motor?
A motor is a device consisting of a rotor spinning in a magnetic field produced by permanent magnets or by coils
How does a motor work?
- When current flows, torque generated angular acceleration made.
- after 180 degree current stops
- current is reversed.
- repeat process
How does a DC motor work? What two parts enable this process.
The interaction of the fields produces the movement of the shaft/ armature. The two parts which do this are the commutator and the brushes.
What are motor windings?
allow for smooth and regular motion.
What are the key traits of the stepper motor (2)?
- No need of a feedback loop.
- Half stepping overation.
What key components enables stepper motors, what does it do?
H bridge. Controls the flow of current to allow the motor to rotate, stop, and reverse.
What is an analog signal?
A signal which includes infinite increments like color or sound level.
What is a digital signal?
A discrete or finite measurement, with a limited set of values, due to be represented by a limited number of bytes.
What the the challenges of analog systems (2)?
- Noise and interference
- Precision
What are the challenges of digital systems(3)?
- Latency
- Power consumption
- Complexity
When should you chose an analog system(4)?
- High precision.
- Real-time response.
- When the physical variable is continuous.
- Traditional control systems without a lot of data processing.
When should you chose an digital system(3)?
- Flexibility and programmability for changing system requirements.
- Noise immunity and long-distance communication.
- If integrating with computers, MCU’s or any system with digital processing.
What is a hybrid system?
A system which uses both analog and digital components to try to cancel out each others drawbacks.
What are some applications of hybrid systems(3)?
- communication systems
- control systems
- audio and video equipment
What is binary(4)?
- A number system consisting of 0’s and 1’s
- otherwise known as base 2
- 1 = on, 0 = off
- each number is a bit, each 4 is a nibble, an entire group is a word
