What is political parties?
Political parties is needed in democracy to provide choice for voters
What is Political Party?
Group of officials who are linked with a group of citizens in an organization, and whose main objective is for officials to attain or maintain political power
What are the 3 aspects of a party?
- in the government ( party officials holding government positions)
- in the electorate (voters & party members)
- as organisations (leaders, activists)
What are the different types of parties?
- Caucus parties ( established in the parliament by link-minded people)
- Mass Parties ( mobilising large groups focusing on social cleavages)
- Catch-all ( trying to get as many vote as possible, no strict ideology)
- Cartel Parties ( restrict competition, act for the government rather than for the people)
What do parties do?
- Mobilize citizens
- Represent society
- Structure popular vote
- Recruit leaders for office
- Bring together diverse interest
What is political Spectrum? And what type is there?
Political spectrum distinguished parties based on their ideology
- Economic scale ( communism to free market)
- Social scale (weak/no government to strong government/dictatorship)
What is party system?
The system of interactions resulting from interparty competition
What are the types of party system?
- Predominant Party system
(Several parties exist, one always wins) - Two Party system
( several parties exist, only two can have absolute majorities) - Multiparty system
( several parties exist, multiple can win elections + form government
Multiparty Types:
- moderate (3-5 parties)
France, Germany - Extreme (5+ parties)
Italy, NL, Belguim
What is Anti-Politics?
They argument against political parties.
- declining party membership
- parties being corrupt and pursuing officials interest
- parties become active only at elections
- Parties fight over petty issues
