Lecture 8D - Bordetella pertussis and parapertussis (Dr. Daniels) Flashcards
Describe Bordatella pertussis and parapertussies
gram negative
rod
obligate aerobe
VERY CONTAGIOUS
What disease does it cause?
Whooping cough
-potentially fatal in infants
Attack rate
90% (9/10 ppl in household will get it)
How many ppl can 1 person infect?
12-15
Who is infected/carriers?
Adults
Where colonization happens
nasopharynx, just like pneumococcus in children
Ciliary adherence in trachea/bronchi via…
- filamentous hemagglutinin (Fha)
- Pili (fimbriae)
- pertactin protein
How do they damage
increase cAMP -decrease neutrophil fxn -increase capillary permeability leads to edema LPS causes inflammation pertussis toxin
does B. pertusses have pertusses toxin?
Yes
Does p. parapertussis have pertussis toxin?
No
What are the stages of whooping cough?
- Catarrhal stage (CONTAGIOUS runny nose)
- 1-2 weeks
- Paroxysmal Stage (coughing)
- 1-6 weeks
- Convalescent stage (recovery)
- 2-3 weeks
Diagnosis of whooping cough
deep nasal swab (culture) nasal flush (PCR)
When is whooping cough diagnosable
less than 3 weeks of cough onset (paroxymal stage) b/c few organisms are present after that point.
How to prevent whooping cough
dTaP vaccine if less than 11 years old.
Tdap vaccine if 11-64 or pregnant
-this one has lower doses of diptheria & pertussis components
What do dTaP and Tdap contain?
tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis vaccines
