Lecture 8 - Qualitative data analysis Flashcards
what is a semi-structured interview?
a flexible interview process where there is a protocol, but the researcher may deviate from it if needed
what are some important things to think about when doing an interview?
face-to-face, record it, quiet place w. no disturbances, one at a time, allocate sufficient time for it
how are the respondents usually chosen for interviews?
based on availability, position, knowledge about the studied phenomena, snowball sample.
data coding
the process where data is broken down into categories or themes and given labels
theoretical saturation
the point at which new data does not provide with any new information
constant comparison
maintaining a close connection between data and conceptualization to insure correspondence between categories and data
analytic induction
Analytic induction is an approach to the analysis of data in which the researcher seeks universal explanations of phenomena by pursuing the collection of data until no cases that are inconsistent with a hypothetical explanation (deviant or negative cases) of a phenomenon are found.
