Institute that wants to work with lab animals needs licences
- Article 2 of WoD (wet op dierproeven): licence for breeding and conducting experiments with lab animals
- Project licence for animal experiments

Obtaining a project license: route
UvA Researcher (need art. 9) –> IvD +veterinarian –> Centrale commissie Dierproeven (CCD) –> Dierexperimenten Commissie (DEC) –> approval to CCD –> Licence holder UvA –> Researcher
IvD, CCD and DEC need to agree on the project proposal before approval of licence.

Welfare evaluation of animals
- Upon finalisation of every animal experiment
- Description of actual course of the experiment
- Description of actual discomfort
- Mandatory to send copy after finalisation to IvD
Legal regulations of housing
- Group housing
- Environmental enrichment
- Solid floor with bedding material
- Daily registration of temperature and humidity
Sanctioning
o Admonition (mandatory meeting with the licensee)
o Temporary disqualification from conducting animal experiments
o Total disqualification
o Dismissal

Member states of EU shall ensure to implement the principle of the 3Rs in all aspects of laboratory animal use.
