Lecture 8 - Intro To Archaeology Flashcards
What is the difference between invasive and noninvasive remote sensing?
Invasive methods include coring and augering, while noninvasive methods include magnetometry.
What does magnetometry detect?
Magnetometry detects the strength and sometimes the direction of magnetic fields, identifying items with iron content, fire pits, brick foundations, and storage pits.
Recent findings of mammoth tracks at White Sands.
How does Electrical Resistivity work?
Electrical Resistivity sends a mild electrical current into the ground and measures resistance, identifying stone or brick foundations and trenches.
It does not provide accurate depth measurements.
What is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)?
GPR uses electromagnetic waves to detect subsurface disturbances, works best in sandy sediments, and gives fairly accurate depth measurements.
It does not detect bone and requires specialized training.
What are the two types of reconnaissance surveys?
The two types of reconnaissance surveys are ground and aerial.
What can crop marks indicate?
Crop marks can indicate possible archaeological sites.
What is the difference between oblique and vertical aerial photography?
Oblique aerial photography captures images at an angle, helping to see depressions and shadows, while vertical photography captures images straight down, aiding in mapping.
What is SLAR?
SLAR (Sideways Looking Airborne Radar) submits airborne radar for detection but is now outdated by LiDAR.
What is LiDAR and its benefits?
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) uses a laser scanner to rapidly survey landscapes, allowing for the removal of vegetation to reveal the earth’s surface, depressions, and high points.
LiDAR scanners are now found in devices like certain iPhones.
How can satellite imaging be used in archaeology?
Satellite imaging can help find archaeological sites by analyzing images from space.
What is Sidescan Sonar used for?
Sidescan Sonar is used to detect large features on the ocean floor.
What are the advantages of drone photography in archaeology?
Drone photography provides a cost-effective way to see sites from above and aids in perspective and mapping.
What is an archaeological survey?
An archaeological survey is a data collection method used to gain information about a site or region, inspecting both surface and subsurface to gather archaeological data.
