Q

What major vein system drains the GI tract?

Be able to label these veins in image

A

The hepatic portal system (GI to liver to IVC). Blood passes through liver so nutrients are absorbed and processed there

16
Q

What happens to the GI venous system if the liver is damaged?

A

-Blood has no effective path back to the heart (since liver is non-functional = damaged hepatic portal system) and has to find a different route

17
Q

What alternative routes does the venous return take in the case of liver damage?

A

from HPV….

L gastric V > esophageal v. (esophageal varices> rupture)
Paraumbilical V. > epigastric v.
IMV > superior rectal v. (hemorrhoids)
retroperitoneal vs (from descending colon)

….to iliac v. > IVC
