Lecture 8: Cranial nerves Flashcards
Name the 12 cranial nerve?
- Olfactory
- Optic
- Occulomotor
- Trochlear
- Trigeminal
- Abducens
- Facial
- Vesibulocochlear
- Glossopharyngeal
- Vagus
- Accessory
- Hypoglossal
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve I?
Cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone
sensory w links to the imbic system
First to notice issues when a person develops alzheimers or parkinsons
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve II?
Sensory
Optic canal to the optic chiasm before the LGB
crosses over so eye damage depends on where the issues occurs
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve III?
damage results in?
Superior orbital fissure
motor control of the superior, medial and inferior rectus as well as the inferior oblique
damage results in downwards abducted eye
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve IV?
Motor cotrol of the superior oblique
Superior orbital fissure
Trochlear nerve palsy = downwards, inwards gaze
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve V branches?
Opthalmic - SOF - sensory
Maxillary - Foramen rotundum - Sensory
Mandibular - foramen ovale - sensory (touch of ant. 2/3 tongue) + chewing muscles
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve VI?
Abducens nerve leaves via SOF
motor for lateral rectus of eye
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve VII?
Motor function for facial expression, PSMP of submandibular, sulingual and lacrimal glands
Sensory function (taste) of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue + soft palate
Internal acoustic meatus
Facial nerve palsy results in a dry mouth and alterd taste not to mention loss of expression
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve VIII?
Sensory = info of sound and balance from middle ear to the brain
Internal acoustic meatus
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve IX?
Glossopharyngeal
sensory = posterior 1/3 tongue (taste and touch), tonsils, pharynx, middle ear
motor = stylopharyngeus, upper pharyngeal muscles and parotid gland
Leaves via Jugular foramen
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve X?
Vagus nerve
PSMP
motor + sensory (including external ear)
Jugular foramen
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve XI?
(spinal) Accessory
Motor = sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
Jugualar foramen
Function and leaving point of cranial nerve XII?
Hypoglossal
Tongue muscles & strap muscles by ansa cervicalis
Hypoglossal canal
Bell’s Palsy
Loss of expression on one side of the face due to inflammation of the facial nerve, can be from herpes or any other infection leading to inflammation. Can resolve itself if the acute inflammation goes away.
Divisions of the Opthalmic nerve
- Frontal nerve nerve
- Nasociliary nerve
- lacrimal nerve
