Lecture 8 Flashcards
What is solubility?
A measure of how much solute will dissolve in a given volume of solvent.
What is a saturated solution?
When a maximum amount of solute is dissolved in a particular volume of solvent at temperature, T.
What is solubility (s) defined as?
The amount of solute that will dissolve in 1 L of water
What is the solubility product, Ksp?
The equillibrium constant for the dissolution of a slightly soluble salt in water.
What is the only thing that appears in Ksp expressions?
Products because the reactants are always solids, which don’t appear
How do you derive a relationship between Ksp and s?
- Write the expression for Ksp
- Express the concentration of ions in terms of s
- Substitute 2 into 1
If Q is smaller than Ksp will a precipitate form?
No, reaction continues to the right
If Q is larger than Ksp, will a precipitate form?
Yes, the reaction goes back to the left
What will the presence of a common ion do to the solubility of an ionic solid?
Decrease it
Where is the equillibrium if the equillibrium constant is large?
To the right
Where is the equillibrium if the equillibrium constant is small?
To the left
What is the constant K only changed by?
Temperature
