Lecture 8 Flashcards
Washing your hands everyday is necessary to prevent infection True or False
False- hand washing is not necessary everyday….just use hand HYGIENE because there is a significant difference from hand washing and hand hygiene…. because alcohol sanitizer doesn’t crack your hands like hand washing :)
Irritant contact dermatitis
- common in dentistry
- Physical irritation of the skin
- NOT allergic reaction
- dryness, fissuring, redness of hands
Irritant reactions
A form of dermatitis caused by contact with a substance that physically or chemically damages the skin
Aggravations leading to irritation dermatitis
glove powder frequent washing of hands contact with disinfectant chemicals
Sensitizing dose
- initial immune response to allergen
- no symptoms manifested
- latent interval required before sensitivity can be expressed
- # of exposures for sensitization of individual
Challenge dose
- exposure to allergen in a sensitized person results in allergic symptoms
- less allergen concentration needed for challenge response
- severity of symptoms dependent on extent of sensitization
- some do not react, or only slightly react to multiple challenges
What type of allergic response is Allergic Contact Dermatitis?
Type 4
How long does it take to have rash appear after exposure with allergic contact dermatitis?
several hours to days after exposure
What type of allergic response is latex hypersensitivity?
Type 1
What are you allergic to in the natural rubber latex?
proteins
Hypersensitivity reactions (allergies) are a result of
normally beneficial immune responses acting inappropriately
Chemicals in dental products can lead to a Type _____ allergy
type 4
Latex hypersensitivity symptoms of Type 1 localized reaction
- immediate IgE allergic reaction
- develops within minutes to latex protein challenge
- urticaria, hives, pruritus, rhinitis
Latex hypersensitivity symptoms of Type 1 systemic reaction
- more generalized, severe manifestations
- conjunctivitis, laryngeal/ respiratory distress
Latex hypersensitivity symptoms of Type 4 reaction
- delayed, contact dermatitis
- slow-forming, localized rash, necrosis, sloughing
- develops within 12-24 hrs to chemical challenge
