Lecture 8 Flashcards
Genetic Drift
Stochastic changes in allele frequency due to random variaiton in fecundity and mortality
Gene Flow
Movement of alleles from one population to another due to chance alone
Genetic drift vs gene flow
- Gene flow occurs due to chance alone
- Genetic drift involves organisms physically moving to another location
Measurement of Gene Flow
Using neutral genetic markers, gentic variants that don’t lead to protein changes so that they can’t be affected by natural selection
Stochastic vs Deterministic Forces of Evolution
Stochastic forces are unpredictable or random while deterministic forces are predictable or non - random
Examples of Stochastic Forces
Mutation, recombination, genetic drift
Examples of Deterministic Forces
Natural selection
Migration
Movement of organisms into a new population
Types of Gene Flow Events
Population bottleneck and founder events
Population Bottleneck
Type of gene flow event. Invovles a single sharp reduction in abundance, causes loss of divesity
Founder Event
Type of gene flow event. Colonization by a few individuals that start a new population, contains fraction of divesity of the original population
Type of Movement of Human Migration
Founder event
Phenotypic Plasticity
The ability of a genotype to modify its phenotype in response to a particular environment
How phenotypic plsticity occurs
Through modifications to development, growth and/or behavior
