What is activation energy?
Is the minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction. All chemical reactions need a certain amount of activation energy to get started.
What is an exothermic reaction?
At the end of the reaction the products have less energy than the reactants, as there is a release of energy.
What is an endothermic reaction?
The reaction continually absorbs energy to keep going. The energy of the products is greater than the energy of the reactants.
What factors affect the activation energy?
The nature of the reactant= ionic reactant activation energy will be low as there is an attraction between reacting species.
Catalyst: positive provides an alternative path where the activation energy is lower. Negative catalyst provides a higher activation energy.
Whats the formula for Activation Energy?
K = Ae-Ea/RT
How do you get the formula for ln(k1/k2)
Taking natural log on both sides
ln k = ln A − Ea.RT
Then make Ea the subject of the formula and solve the equation
Subtract lnk2 from lnk1
What is the difference between activation energy and energy?
Activation energy is the minimum amount of extra energy required by a reacting molecule to get converted into product. Free energy is the amount of energy available for a thermodynamic system to perform thermodynamic work.
What is high activation energy?
A significant amount of energy must be added to the system before the reaction can proceed. This can make the reaction slower or more difficult to initiate. This is because molecules can only complete the reaction once they have reached the top of the activation energy barrier.

Concentration
Catalysts

How does surface area affect the rate?
If solid is broken into smaller pieces, more particles are exposed to the surface and the reaction happens quicker.
How does temp effect the rate?
Temp increases, particles accelerate, particles have more energy= which helps reactants get over the activation energy barrier more quickly.
How does pressure effect the rate?
Pressure increases the concentration of gas increases= rate of reaction increases.
How does a catalyst effect the rate of change of a reaction?
Catalyst introduce alternative reaction pathways with significantly lower activation energies. More molecules are able to take part in fruitful collisions.
What is an example of a catalyst?
In the haber process an iron catalyst is sued to increase the rate.

A material used to decrease the rate of a chemical reaction.
