Lecture 10 Flashcards
What is the plum pudding model?
Positive sphere with negative electrons distributed all over.
What was the Rutherford experiment?
The Rutherford experiment was when alpha particles were fired at a thin gold leaf. Some passed straight through, some were slightly defected and very few were deflected directly back. This is due to the electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged alpha particles and the positively charged neutrons.
What is the Schrödinger Model?
This model views the atom as consisting of a nucleus surrounded by a hazy cloud of electrons.
What is the characteristics of Schrödinger Model?
Describes the movement of electrons as standing waves.
The electrons move constantly, they do not have a fixed or defined position.
Does not predict the location of the electron, nor does it describe the route.
What is the modern atomic theory?
Nucleus containing protons and neutrons and a vague gradient or cloud surrounding it containing the electrons. Electrons are represented as a cloud because of their behaviour being probabilistic.
What is Youngs Experiment?
Showed interference patterns between both waves which showed that light could behave as both a particle and a wave.
What are the limitations of Schrodinger Model?
It assumes an electron is a wave and gives the probability of finding the position of an electron in the orbitals at a given time.
What is 1Angstrom in metres?
1x10^-10=1A
Whats the mass of an electron?
9.1x10^-31kg
Whats the formula for de Brogile wavelength?
wavelength=h/mv
What is the proof of de Brogiles wavelength?
hv=mc^2
v=c/wavelength (v=speed/distance)
hc/wavelength=mc^2
What is the mass of a proton and neutron?
1.67x10^-27
What is the Rutherford-Bohr Model formula?
mvr=nh/2pi
What is plancks constant?
6.626x10^-34 Js
What is the energy formula?
e=hf
e=hc/wavelength
