lecture 7 - vsepr Flashcards
Define VSEPR Theory.
Predicts the 3D arrangement of molecules by minimizing electron pair repulsion.
What is an electron domain?
A region where electrons are most likely to be found, including lone pairs and bonds.
What is the shape of CH₄?
Tetrahedral.
Describe the shape of NH₃.
Trigonal pyramidal due to one lone pair.
What is the geometry of H₂O?
Bent (or V-shaped) due to two lone pairs.
Rank the repulsion strength of electron pairs.
Lone pair-lone pair > lone pair-bonding pair > bonding pair-bonding pair.
How does hybridization relate to geometry?
sp (linear), sp² (trigonal planar), sp³ (tetrahedral), sp³d (trigonal bipyramidal), sp³d² (octahedral).
What is the shape of CO₂?
Linear
Predict the geometry of SF₆.
Octahedral.
What determines the shape of a molecule?
Number of lone pairs and atoms bonded to the central atom.
