Lecture 7: Special Populations Flashcards
Definition of CP
Group of disorders of the development of movement and posture causing activity limitation
Attributed to nonprogressive distrubance that occured in the developing fetal or infant brain
In CP what other things often accompany the motor disorders
Motor disorders often accompanied by distrubanes of sensation, cognition, communication, perception, and behaviour or seizure disorders
What are the causes of CP
Disruption in brain development Prior to birth... . - Genetic etiology - Maternal infections - Infant infections - Fetal stroke - Lack of O2 - Premature birth/low birthweight
Prevalence of CP
1/500 children
1/3 low birth weight
4 clinical subtypes of CP
- Spastic
- Ataxic
- Dystonic
- Choreo-athetotic
Spastic CP
increased tone: muscle tightness or contractions
Hyper reflexia
Ataxic CP
Coordination, accuracy and force of movement abnormalities
Dystonic CP
Hypokinesia (stiff movements)
Muscle tone fluctuates
Choreo-athetotic CP
Hyperkinesia (extraneous movements of hands and fingers)
Decreased tone: hypotonia (muscle lax)
Monoplegia
One extremity
Hemiplegia
One half of body (upper and lower of one side)
Diplegia
Lower extremities
Quadriplegia
Upper and lower extremities
**Speech and Language of CP
Receptive language seems to be at around 50%
What is the purpose of the gross motor function classification system
Determine childs potential in terms of motor function
It examines motor abilities that children can perform by 5
Has 5 levels
Communication Function Classification System: What to focus on
- Activity and participation of ICF
- Everyday communication performance
Why do you want to classify everyday performance
- Acknowledge all mehtods of communication the person is using
- Selecting goals that make the persons communication more effective
- Analyze how environmental factors may influence communication performance
- Allow for common language
What are the “F words” of CFCS
Function Family Fitness Fun Friends
Future
Function
Childs occupation: play
Activities being engaged in life vs ‘normal’ as only goal
Family
Context in which child is functioning
Family centred care
Fitness
Promoting physical activity/recreation
Fun
Personal factors (whats fun for the child) Participation in activities that the child likes
Friends
Quality of relationships
Future
Children are not static so you must look ahead to the future of the child
