Lecture 7 - Social Network Analysis Flashcards
Why analyze social networks? (2)
- Network influences people their behavior
2. Social networks can show the importance of individuals or groups
Nodes
Objects, individuals, players
Edges, links, ties
Connections between nodes
Weighted edges
Intensity of a link, how often is this edge used?
Unweighted edges
0 or 1
Directed edges
one way relationship
undirected edges
mutual relationships
degree of a node
number of edges connected to a node
neighbourhood
two nodes are neighbours if they share an edge in-between
Density of a network
Average degree of all the nodes in the network
Walk
Sequence of links connecting two nodes, this allows for repetition
Cycle
A walk that starts and ends at the same node
Path
A walk where a node appears at most once
Geodesic
Shortest path between two nodes
Diameter of a network
Maximum shortest path in a network
Random network
Low clustering coefficient and low average path length
Small world networks
High clustering coefficient and low average path length
Scale free networks (protein networks)
These networks usually have hubs
The strength of weak ties is?
Individuals in your close network are likely to know the same things you know, and individuals in your distant network are likely to know different things than you know. So if you want to gain knowledge, you should seek it at the edge of your network.
Structural holes are very important what is it?
Structural holes are gaps in the networks that are only connected through one node, this node has a lot of power and value sinds they can act as information brokers between clusters.
- third party opportunities
- brokerage
- entrepreneurship
