Lecture 6 - Internet of Things Flashcards
What is the internet of things?
a system involving connected devices that gather data, connect with the internet, generate analytics, and adapt behaviour based on the analytics.
Internet of Things layers/architecture: (4)
- Sensors, collecting data
- Connectivity, sending data to cloud
- Data Processing, making data useful
- User interface, delivering information to user
Sensors, data gathering through 5 senses:
- Sight
- Hearing
- Smell
- Taste
- Touch
Connectivity, sending data to the cloud. Four models of connectivity:
- Device to device
- Device to cloud
- Device to gateway
- Backend data sharing
Data processing, making data useful: 4 steps
- Sensors send data to the cloud
- Data gets processed and analysed
- Software derives the next step from software and algorithms
- Feedback gets sent to the user
User interface, how to deliver information to the user? Consider three things:
- Connectivity (real time processing or not)
- Performance (present all of the data at once or page by page)
- Simplicity (what does the user need to see)
What is an IoT platform?
the middle man between all of the devices and the applications the sensor data is used for.
Interoperability issues in IoT platforms, 3 options:
- Over the top interoperability (horizontal, external data change)
- Platform enables interoperability (horizontal, through MW platform)
- Platform enables interoperability (vertical, through MW platform)
Better quality is vertical, better fit is horizontal
