What is the Cervical smear test/Pap test?
A test in which a specimen of cellular material is scraped from the cervix and is then stained and examined under a microscope by a cytologist to identify early cellular changes
What is the purpose of a Pap smear?
To detect early cancer of cervix
Explanation: It collects squamous epithelial cells + some endocervical cells from the transformation zone of the cervix
When is the ideal time for obtaining a cervical smear?
Midcycle
Explanation: prevents contamination from menstrual flow and allows for accuracy of results
What are the indications for a Pap test?
- Women between 25 and 64
- Start within 1 year of onset sexual activity
What are the contraindications for a Pap test?
- During pregnancy
- Immediately postpartum
What is a vaginal speculum?
An instrument used during gynaecological examination to facilitate the visualisation of the vagina and cervix
TWO TYPES:
virgin and non-virgin
What should the doctor document about the patient?
- Date of last menstruation
- Any abnormal bleeding
- Any unusual vaginal discharge
- Contraception
- Date of last cervical smear
- Any abnormal smear results
- Any treatment to the cervix
What must happen post-procedure?
- Observe any discharge from vagina
- Perineal care is needed
- Assist patient to change from lithotomy position to supine position
- Documentation
- Send specimen to lab with form
