Lecture 7: ecological land classification system of Ontario Flashcards
Ecological Land Classification System
a system for getting consistent description, identification, classification, and mapping of “ecological land units”
Ecological Land Unit
Distinct ecological areas identified by geology, topography, soils, vegetation, climate, species, anthropogenic factors
goal of classification system
reduce complex natural variation to a reasonable number of meaningful units
rank hierarchy of classification categories from largest to smallest
- ecozone
- ecoregion
- ecodistrict
- ecosection
- ecosite
- ecoelement
things covered in ecosection
land forms, surface material, vegetation, old growth, road access planning, wood supply
remember: road access planning, wood supply
things covered in ecosite
topography, substrate, hydrology, vegetation, species risk management, environment assessments (Crown forest sustainability act)
remember: species risk management, and crown forest sustainability act
things covered in ecoelements
substrates and vegetation types, may occur in multiple ecosites or ecodistricts, mapping areas of special management concern, evaluating natural heritage, , restoration planning, scientific research
remember: scientific research!
