Littoral zone (interdial zone)
Shallow shoreline under influence of tides
Neritic zone
Coast to margin of continental shelf (to 200 m deep) influence of currents
Oceanic zone
offshore of neritic zone (beyond continental shelf), divided into several depth zones
Benthic zone
In contact with the ocean bottom
Photic zone
Where light penetrates to
Aphotic zone
Where light does not penetrate
Estuary
An estuary forms where a river meets the ocean and freshwater mixes with salt water. Water flow fluctuates daily and seasonally which alters salinity. Species have adaptations that allow them to cope with salinity changes.
Lotic
Refers to flowing water e.g. rivers, streams etc.
what is FPOM
Fine particulate organic matter, comes from small rivers (streams 1-3) and is a a significant source of energy in medium streams (4-6)
What does Lentic mean?
Still water e.g. lakes and ponds
Epilimnion
In summer that is the top region of water body (eg lake)
Trick: epi like epic which is the top
Metalmnion
In summer that is the middle region of the eater body
Hypolimnion
In summer that the lower region of water bbody where all the nutrients fall but oxygen is used up
