Lecture 7= 9/25 Flashcards
Primary sexual differentiation
involves only the gonads (where gametes are produced).
secondary sexual differentiation
: involves the overall appearance, including external genitalia, mammary glands, etc.
Unisexual, dioecious, gonochoric
refer to an individual containing only male or female reproductive organ.
bisexual
refer to an individual containing both male and female reproductive organs. They can produce fertile gametes of both sexes.
intersex
individuals of intermediate sexual differentiation, who are most often sterile.
heterogametic sex
X Y
homogametic sex
X X
Klinefelter
XXY, caused by nondisjunction in mother
males with multiple X chromosome
similar to Klinefelters but symptoms are much more severe
XYY
no distinguishing morphology (not a syndrome)
Turner Syndrome
XO, nondisjunction
females with multiple X chromosomes
more X’s, more physical characteristics
TDF
sex is determined by the presence of TDF, not Y chromosome,
XX males are possible if the SRY gene translocated onto an autosome
SRY
transcription factor that binds to DNA and regulates the expression of some genes
sex ratio is not exactly one
sperm may be lighter and therefore produce higher number of zygotes
