Lecture 7 + 8 Flashcards
What surrounds the spinal cord preventing it from drying out?
The meninges
What laminae of rexed are in the dorsal horn and what is their function?
LI - LVI Sensory Processing
What laminae of rexed are in the ventral horn and what is their function?
LVII-LIX Motor Processing
Where do the Aalpha and Abeta fibres terminate?
In LIV
Where do the Adelta fibres terminate?
LI or LVI Mainly LI
Where do the C fibres terminate?
LII
What are the two ascending pathways?
Dorsal column medial lemniscal Anterolateral
What is the ascending pain pathway?
Anterolateral
What is the ascending touch pressure pathway?
Dorsal-column-medial lemniscal
Outline the Dorsal column medial lemniscal pathway
It decussates in the medulla Synapses at the dorsal column nuclei and the ventral posterior nucleus 3 synapses Aalpha and Abeta fibres
Whats the spinocervical tract?
An ascending tactile pressure pathway which is poorly developed in man
What are the three tracts in the anterolateral system?
Spinothalamic Spinoreticular Spinomesencephalic
Outline the spinothalamic tract
Originate in the spinal cord at LI, V and VI Conscious pain perception Afferent fibres synapse in the superficial dorsal horn Decussate in the spinal cord Synapse In the Thalamus
Where do the anterolateral pathways decussate?
At the spinal cord level
Where does the dorsal column medial lemniscal pathway decussate?
In the medulla
Outline the spinoreticular tract
Afferent fibres synapse in the superficial dorsal horn Decussate at the spinal cord Synapse in reticular formation of the pions Project to the thalamus and synapse again Temperature bias
Outline the spinomesencephalic tract
Afferent fibres synapse in the superficial dorsal horn Decussate at the spinal cord Ascend in the spinemesencephalic tract Synapse and terminate in periaqueductal gray matter of the midbrain Suppress pain - no conscious perception
Draw a diagram of the 4 lobes of the brain
Temporal Lobe, Frontal lobe, Parietal lobe, occipital lobe

What are the three principal descending tracts?
Corticospianl tract, corticobulbar tract and the monoaminergic pathway
Outline the corticospinal tract
Controls limb movement
The lateral tract decuassates at the medulla and has two motor neurons (upper and lower).
The ventral tract never decussates
What do the basal ganglia do?
Suppress movement
Where are the basal ganglia located?
In the sub-corticol nuclei
Name the basal ganglia
Caudate Nucleus
Globus Pallidus
Subthalmic nucleus
Putamen
Substantia Nigra
Deficits associated with basal ganglia lesions:
Dyskinesias
Cogwheel rigidity
Bradykinesia
Parkinsons
Huntingtons
