Q

Name some reasons why wetlands are suffering and describe them (3)

A
  1. )Reduction/alteration of wetland acreage
    - water temp increases
    - pH changes
    - atmospheric deposition.
  2. ) Contaminants
    - Hydrocarbon, radionuclides from oil and gas production
    - Oil can alter reproduction, growth, and behavior of wetland organisms. Plants suffocate when oil blocks their stomata
  3. ) Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) enter estuarine wetlands through industrial effluent and atmospheric deposition
    - concentrate in sediments and thus contaminate benthic organisms
