Lecture 7 Flashcards
Primates are K selected organisms
Long lived, small litters, slow to mature, high parental investment and big bodied.
Factors That Affect Lifetime Reproductive Success
Age at first birth, interbirth interval and age at death.
Life History Theory
Growth, maintenance, survival and reproduction. Trade offs and unequal force of selection a different stages of life.
Life History Stages - 1
Gestation, conception to birth
Life History Stages - 2
Infant, Birth to maternal independence (weaning)
Life History Stages - 3
Juvenile, Independence through sexual maturity
Life History Stages - 4
Sub adult, Sexual maturity until growth stops
Life History Stages - 5
Adult
Life History Variables
Length of gestation, offspring (number, size and sex), Interbirth interval, Age/size weaning, Age/size at first reproduction and lifespan.
Primate Life History
Slow, long gestation, large children, slow growth, late weaning and low production rates, long juvenile period and late age of maturity and a long life span.
Unpredictable Environments
Fruiting is especially variable and in any given year
