Lecture 7 Flashcards
why is project control needed
to visualize project performance
detects under performance relative to a baseline
what is the earned value
budgeted costs of completed tasks
how do you calculate time performance
earned value/planned spend
how do you calculate time to completion
original estimate/time performance
how do you calculate cost performance
earned value/actual spend
how do you calculate estimated cost at completion
original budget/cost performance
what are the limits of project control
- baseline difficult to obtain
- measurement difficult to obtain
- control paradox
- downsides of control
why is it difficult to obtain a baseline
- diff to predict a reasonable baseline in the planning stages
baseline may change due to developments outside our control
why are measurements difficult to obtain
info is not always real time
may involve human judgement (degree of task completion)
what is the control paradox
the more control, the less control you have
too much bureaucracy causes staff to start working around it
what are the downsides of control
being controlled can be perceived negatively
control may reduce team creativity
