Lecture 7 Flashcards
What is inheritance
behaviour of genes at the level of the organism
Laws of inheritance
law of dominance and uniformity
law of segregation
law of independent assortment
Generations
parents- true breeding
first filial generation F1
Second filial generation F2
Law of dominance and uniformity
some alleles are dominant over others
if one allele is dominant then it will determine the phenotype
Law of segregation
during gamete formation the alleles will segregate so each gamete contains only1 allele
true-breeding parents
have 2 identical alleles
F1 one of a dominant and recessive true breeding parents
all heterozygous
F2 of true breeding parents
3:1 phenotypic ratio
1:2:1 genotypic ratio
Test cross
as homozygous dominant and heterozygous have the same phenotype this is used to test for genotype
cross breed the individual with a recessive homozygous individual
if F1 has recessive phenotype then they are heterozygous
Dihybrid cross
when you look at two characteristics in the same cross
Law of independent assortment
each pair of alleles separates indepedently of another pair of alleles into the gametes
