Lecture 7 Flashcards
1
Q
Cellular Respiration
A
The process by which organisms break down glucose into a form that the cell can use as energy
2
Q
ATP
A
Adenosine triphosphate, the primary energy carrier in living things
3
Q
Mitochondria
A
The eukaryotic cell structure where cellular respiration occurs
4
Q
Cytoplasm
A
The contents of a cell between the plasma membrane and the nuclear envelope; includes cytosol which is the jelly-like substance that fills the space between organelles
5
Q
Aerobic
A
Process that requires oxygen
6
Q
Anaerobic
A
Process that does not require oxygen
7
Q
Fermentation
A
An anaerobic pathway for breaking down glucose
8
Q
Endocrine Glands
A
- Insulin – produced when glucose levels rise in order to stimulate the cells to uptake glucose from
the blood and to lower blood glucose levels. Also stimulates cells to uptake aa from the blood. - Glucagon – produced when glucose levels drop and its function is to bring glucose back to
normal levels
9
Q
Exocrine Glands:
A
- Amylase – digests amylose, starches
- Lipases – digest lipids, triglycerides
- Proteases – digest proteins
