Lecture 7 Flashcards
Who was the first to use the combination of joystick and rudder control?
Louis Charles Joseph Blériot
What is a control surface?
A moveable airfoil, or any surface used to control the aircraft in flight
What are the primary controls?
Elevator, rudder, ailerons
What are secondary flight controls?
Modify the effects of the primary flight controls or air flows
What do the ailerons control?
Roll about the longitudinal axis
What do elevators control?
Pitch about the lateral axis
What does the rudder control?
Yaw about the vertical axis
Discuss a left roll in relation to the ailerons
Roll left puts the left aileron up causing less lift and the right aileron down causing more lift
What causes a slip?
Not enough rudder, causes nose to point outside the turn
What causes skid?
Too much rudder, causes nose to point inside the turn
Slips and skids are not _____
Coordinated turns
A combination of _____ and _____ input is used to keep from slipping or skidding.
rudder
aileron
What is adverse yaw?
The aircraft rolls one way but directionally turns the opposite way
How do you fix adverse yaw?
Differential ailerons
Make parasite drag by raising the up aileron up more than the down aileron goes down
What are flaps?
What are they used for?
Where are they found?
High lift/drag devices
Improve lift at slower speeds
Create more drag to descend without losing airspeed
Trailing edge of the wing
