Lecture 6 - Salivary glands Flashcards
what are the fucntions of saliva?
- prevention of dehydration of oral mucosa
- lubrication of mastication and swallowing
- maintaining proper dental hygiene
- assist in digestion of carbohydrates
- solvent for taste and smell
what is saliva made from name the 6 things.
- mucin glycoproteins
- aplha amylase
- proline-rich proteins
- lactoferrin
- Immunoglobulin A
- lysozomes
what is a salvion?
- basic unit of salivary gland
what is a acinus?
pyramidal shaped cell which is surronded by myoepithelial cells. that secrets cellular products like protiens and electrolytes.
what is a duct cell and what are its functions?
modifies primary secretion
makes secretion hypotonic
how is salivation controlled ?
through the Autonomics nervouse systemm:
- sympthatheic:
- produce sticky saliva
- fight or flight
- periatrerial plexuses
- parasympathetic:
- runny saliva
- rest/ digest
- secretomotor nerve supply via craninal nerves
what role does medulla play in salivation ?
secretion and inhibition is becase the stimulus goes to the medulla and the parasympathetic axons (CN7/CN9) promote these activies.
which cranial nerve is linked with what salivary gland?
CN7- facial nerve= sublingual/ sub mandibular
CN9- glossophrayngeal nerve= parotid gland
name the 3 major salivary glands
- parotid
- submandibular
- sublingual
4.
where do the three salivary glands drain to?
- parotid- 2nd maxillary molar- parotid papilla
- submandibular gland- sublingual caruncle
- sublingual gland- sublingual folds
what are the features of the parotid gland?
- largest of the salivary glands
- serous gland rich in amaylase
name the artery and vein that runs through the parotid gland.
retromandibular vein
external carotid artery
what are the 2 branches of the following:
retromandibular vein
External carotid artery
superficial temporal vein
maxillary vein
superficial temporal artery
Maxillary Artery
what nerve runs through the parotid gland?
what is its function?
facial nerve
controls facial expressions
relays taste from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
lable the diagram with the following :
styloid process of the temporal bone
posterior border of mandibular ramus
masseter muscle
sternocleidomastoid
stylohyoid & posterior belly of the digastric muscle
