Lecture 6 + Reading questions Flashcards
What are the three ways of parental influence?
1) Parental modelling
2) Behavior-specific parenting
3) General parenting
What is the theory that applies to the parental modelling?
Social learning theory
Based on the social learning theory, we know that parents who use / look at their phone while interacting with their child are?
1) Less sensitive
2) Less responsive (verbal and non-verbal)
What is the theory that applies to the behavior-specific parenting/internet-specific parenting?
Parental mediation theory
The parental mediation theory consists of which three mechanisms? And this theory is for the … ?
1) Active mediation (talking with young people about the content they saw on television)
2) Restrictive mediation (setting rules and regulations about children’s television viewing)
3) Co-viewing (simply watching television with children)
-> Internet-specific parenting
What is the relationship with ‘Restrictive rules’ and ‘Problematic social media’, regarding girls?
Restrictive rules seem to have a protective factor (negative influence) for problematic social media use.
Are there protective effects of internet-specific parenting regarding boys? And what is the relationship between ‘Frequency of communication’ and ‘Problematic gaming & Problematic social media use’
(1) No protective effect of internet-specific parenting. (2) Frequency of communication is a risk factor for ‘Problematic gaming & Problematic social media use’
What is the effect when boys have problematic gaming symptoms?
Increase in: ‘Restrictive rules’, ‘Reactive rules’, and ‘Frequency of communication’
What is the effect when girls have problematic social media symptoms?
Decrease in quality of communication.
Which two theories apply to the general parenting?
1) Ecological model
2) Self-determination theory
What is the most promising parenting strategy to avoid developing problematic social media use?
Positive parent-child relationships + positive parenting style + setting clear age-appropriate rules about social media + avoiding at-the-moment impulsive interferences.
Geurts et al – 2023- “Parenting Practices and General Parenting dimensions” - Which parenting practices do the authors distinguish and what is the added value of combining both in this study?
They distinguish between parenting practices (1) Internet-specific parenting (2) General parenting. General parenting may enhance or decrease the effectiveness of internet-specific practices.
- Key dimensions of general parenting: responsiveness, demandingness, and autonomy granting.
Vossen et al – “Parenting and Problematic Social media use: a systematic review”
Restricting adolescents’ online access seems a very intuitive parenting practice in preventing problematic social media use (PSMU). What are the authors’ findings regarding rule setting?
(1) Restrictive mediation regarding rule-setting about when, where, and for how long social media can be used is negatively associated with PSMU. (2) When restrictive mediation was intervening with the adolescent’s ongoing social media use, a positive relation with PSMU was found.
